Urgent FDA Recall of Infant Vitamin Supplement

The FDA and manufacturer Nordic Naturals have announced a recall of approximately 3,800 bottles of infant Vitamin D3 liquid supplements. A manufacturing error has resulted in liquids containing a dangerously potent level of Vitamin D3, which could result in serious harm to babies who ingest the supplement.

Parents and caregivers administering Nordic Naturals Baby Vitamin D3 liquid to their infants are urged to check their stock immediately and confirm if their supplement is included in the current recall.

Product Description

Nordic Naturals supplements are sold at retailers nationwide and on the manufacturer’s website, www.nordic.com. They are available over-the-counter and do not require a physician’s prescription to purchase.

The vitamin D3 liquid supplement was sold in a box depicting mountains and the Nordic Naturals® logo. The supplement was contained in a blue bottle within the box with a matching label affixed. The expiration date and lot number are printed on the back of both the bottle and the box.

Reason for Recall

The manufacturer noted an error in their process that resulted in a higher-than-intended potency in a single batch of the medication. It is unclear at this time exactly how potent the supplement is.

Impacts

According to the CDC, Vitamin D3 supplementation is recommended for infants under 12 months of age who are primarily breastfed or who consume a mixture of breastmilk and formula. However, they only need 400 IU daily.

Vitamin D3 overdose can result in serious health effects for infants and babies, particularly when occurring over a prolonged period. Symptoms of Vitamin D3 overdose may include:

  • Vomiting
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Increased Thirst
  • Frequent Urination
  • Failure to Thrive
