Veterinary Waste
Disposal
Proper medical waste disposal is just as important in veterinary practices as it is in human healthcare. Animal patients generate various types of medical waste, from used syringes and surgical tools to pharmaceutical byproducts and pathology samples.
Whether you’re running a busy animal hospital, a rural clinic, or a specialty vet practice, MedWaste provide comprehensive veterinary waste disposal solutions to keep your clinic safe, compliant, and focused on what matters most – caring for animals.

What is Veterinary Medical Waste?
Veterinary medical waste includes any materials that may pose a risk to public health or the environment, typically generated during the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of animals. This can include used sharps (like needles and scalpel blades), animal tissues, blood-soaked gauze, laboratory waste, and expired medications.
Proper segregation, storage, and disposal are key to protecting both veterinary staff and pet owners from exposure

How is Veterinary Waste Classified?
Veterinary waste is categorized in similar ways to human healthcare waste, and includes the following:
- Sharps Waste: Includes needles, syringes, scalpels, and any sharp objects that could puncture or cut skin.
- Biohazardous Waste: Blood, tissues, and other materials that have been contaminated with bodily fluids from animals.
- Pharmaceutical Waste: Expired, unused, or contaminated medications, including controlled substances.
- Pathological Waste: Organs, tissues, or body parts that have been removed during surgery or necropsy.
- General Waste: Non-contaminated items like paper towels or packaging materials.
Using the correct classification ensures that each type of waste is handled and treated appropriately, reducing health risks and maintaining compliance with veterinary waste regulations.

Is veterinary medical waste regulated differently from human medical waste?
While many of the regulations overlap, veterinary clinics still must comply with local and state-specific rules for handling biohazardous and pharmaceutical waste. We help ensure full compliance with all relevant guidelines.
Can I dispose of expired veterinary medications in regular trash?
No, expired medications, especially controlled substances, must be disposed of following DEA and EPA guidelines. We offer compliant pharmaceutical waste disposal services to make this process safe and easy.
What types of veterinary facilities do you service?
We provide waste management for a wide range of animal healthcare settings. This includes general practices, animal hospitals, surgical centers, dental clinics, mobile vet units, and specialty practices like oncology or dermatology.
What’s the difference between a contract and a service agreement?
While your price for service is guaranteed for 12 months, you are never locked into a contract. Our service agreement is a document that details the services that MedWaste will provide along with the price that you can expect to pay.
It is not a locked contract, and you may cancel or change services at anytime without fees, penalties or damages. See a sample of the MedWaste service agreement that is currently in use here.
When do you bill for the service and how can invoices be paid?
MedWaste will send an invoice at month’s end for all services performed and products delivered during that month.
The invoice is due 15 days after its receipt. You will be asked if you’d like to receive your invoices through email or regular mail. All invoices can be paid with credit card or check.
